Building of a breeding program to develop resistant varieties of strawberries with special suitability for organic farming

Description:

The pathogen Botrytis cinerea and Xanthomonas fragariae are of particular importance for organic strawberry production, against which no effective means currently permitted. A reduction is possible only with indirect measures of plant cultivation or the use of vegetable tonics. Resistant or tolerant varieties with special suitability for organic farming would be an efficient approach to improvie the ecological cultivation of strawberries. The proposed project has the goal to adopt an existing program for the cultivation of strawberry varieties for conventional farming to organic farming needs. In this case, as selection criteria resistance or tolerance to the above two Pests included. In Phase 1, existing fruit genetic resources will be tested for their resistance. Based on the results of selected genotypes, which are carried out in phase 2 test crosses. In phase 3 the results of test crosses are then used to combine selected genotypes targeted to occur resistant / tolerant properties. As part of the project, strawberriesof the German Fruit Genebank and strawberry cultivars and wild species of strawberry fruit genebank Pillnitz shall be tested for their resistance to B. cinerea, and Xanthomonas. Therefore resistance tests with both pathogens will be conducted in the greenhouse. For X. fragariae an established resistance test already exists, for B. cinerea, such a test first has to be established. Fot this a pathogen strain collectionis will be applied at the beginning of the project. Based on the results parents will be selected and test crosses performed. Using the results of test crosses genotypes will be identified that are suitable for a selective breeding for resistance.
