Maximum levels of contaminants in commercial fod intended for infants and young children

Description:

The Commission Regulation (EC) No. 466/2001 of 8 March 2001 has set maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuff. According to this regulation article 2 paragraph 2 maximum levels for food intended for infants and young children shall be established by 5 April 2004 at the latest. The evaluation is based on the measured food intake of 737 infants and young children in the age of 3 till 36 month, derived from the DONALD Study (Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed Study) performed at the Research Institute of Child Nutrition, Dortmund out of the period form 1986 until 2001 and from dietary records of 52 infants in the age of 18 till 36 month obtained during duplicate studies out of the years 1995 and 1998 performed at the Ruhr-University Bochum. The measured intake of food and food groups, relevant for the intake of heavy metals, were linked with the maximum levels from Commission Regulation (EC) No. 466/2001 to calculate the Theoretical Maximum Weekly Intake (TMWI) for cadmium, lead and mercury. These TMWIs were compared with tolerable intake values (JECFA FAO/WHO PTWI and U.S. EPA RfD) for different exposure scenarios. Furthermore the currently established tolerable intake values should be evaluated regarding to the protection of infants and young children.
