Functional analysis of Genetic Mechanisms determining Variability of Protective Ability in the Mammary Gland of Cattle; Projects 1, 7, 8: Mastitis associated transciptoanalysis, QTL mapping

Description:

The consortium M.A.S.-Net will perform a functional analysis of genetic mechanisms determining the variability of protective ability in the mammary gland of cattle. Among the functional traits in modern dairy cattle production udder health (mastitis) is one of the key issues for the economy of milk production and for the welfare of dairy cows. Additionally, udder health affects milk quality directly and is a major concern of the consumer due to the risk of residuals in the milk of mastitis treated cows. The main aims of the project are the understanding of basic physiologic mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation in mastitis resistance as well as correlated or interactive effects between different functional traits in cattle, the identification of functional candidate genes in chromosome regions significantly affecting functional traits and the detection of genetic polymorphisms associated with the trait variability that can be used as direct genetic markers in commercial selection programmes.
