Generation of the Die wirtschaftlich bedeutendsten Krankheiten der Kartoffel sind die Kraut- und Knollenfäule (Erreger Phytophthora infestans, Pi) und eine durch das Potato virus Y (PVY) hervorgerufene Virose. Die Aufwendungen zu ihrer Verhütung sind erheblich, nur teilweise erfolgreich und im Ökolandbau vom Gesetzgeber meist nicht zugelassen. Unter ökonomischen und Umweltaspekten ist die Entwicklung von Sorten mit Resistenz gegen beide Krankheiten dringend erforderlich. Im Unterschied zu anderen deutschen Projekten zur Pi-Resistenz geht es hier um die Nutzung qualitativer Resistenzgene, die sich bei der Kartoffel einfacher handhaben lassen und stärkere Effekte zeigen als QTL's. Für eine nachhaltige Nutzung ist ihre Kombination (Pyramidisierung) wichtig. Geeignetes Ausgangsmaterial - Rückkreuzungslinien somatischer Hybriden mit extremer Resistenz gegen das PVY und 2 Pi-Resistenzgenen aus Wildarten (Solanum tarnii bzw. S. bulbocastanum) - wurde entwickelt. Spaltende Populationen für die Entwicklung molekularer Marker für die PVY-Resistenz wurden erzeugt. Für die Pi-Resistenz können publizierte Marker nach Eignungsprüfung genutzt werden.
