Institute for Plant Protection in Fruit Crops and Viticulture (JKI-OW)
The tasks of the institute derive from the German Plant Protection Act and related legal regulations. The institute advises the Federal Government, in particular the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV), on all matters of Plant Protection and Plant Health in the field of fruit crops and viticulture. Its research activities focus on these fields and the specific research tasks defined by BMELV. The institute represents the Federal Government in national and international organizations and working panels (e.g. EPPO, EU) and it is involved in the formulation of regulations and guidelines on plant health. It takes part in the approval procedure for crop protectants. Research activities and sovereign functions are closely interrelated. The institute co-ordinates joint research activities on plant protection problems and control strategies of national interest. Current examples are control strategies for the cherry fruit fly, control of fire blight without use of antibiotics, phytoplasma diseases of fruit crops and grapevine, or esca-disease of grapevine. The results of the institute’s scientific work are made available to federal and state administrative bodies, the scientific community, and growers and consumers as well. The institute organizes technical discussions on specific plant protection problems and communicates their results. Its work includes diverse research activities on phytopathological problems and appropriate control strategies in a wide range of fruit crops, viticulture and hops in both, integrated and organic cropping systems.
