FBN Research Unit Molecular Biology
The Research Unit Molecular Biology aims to elucidate genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of expression and inheritance of selected traits, in order to develop more efficient selection tools to improve sustainability and productivity of animal breeding. Therefore functional and structural genomic approaches are integrated in the main research areas and strategies: - making use of functional biodiversity among populations in map-based approaches to analyse the genetic control of phenotypic variation and to identify candidate genes - function-driven identification and analysis of candidate genes and of the hierarchical interaction of super- and subordinated components within the functional network. These top-down and bottom-up approaches are used to contribute to the genetic improvement of animal health, fitness, adaptability, fertility, and traits related to product quality.
