MRI - Department of Physiology and Biochemistry of Nutrition (MRI-PBE)
The department investigates the physiological and biochemical effects of foods and food components, in order to identify health benefits and potential risks. Special attention is on the metabolic syndrome (obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension), bone metabolism, immune system and the gastro-intestinal tract, as well as on the identification of functional food ingredients (probiotics, prebiotics, phytochemicals), taking in consideration individual genetic characteristics. Studies are done in humans, animal models and cell systems. This should provide a basis for recommendations of a health-maintaining and –promoting diet.
