Collaborative project: Development and testing of a technique for electronic animal identification (EID) based on SAW technology to increase assurance of identification – Subproject 1

Description:

The aim of this joint research project is to develop and to test RFID transponders based on piezoelectric materials as far as readers and software especially adapted for electronic animal identification (EID) applications in animal husbandry. The SAW transponders have (surface acoustic wave) advantages over conventional RFID transponders which are from interest in livestock farming. These passive SAW transponders do not need additional power supply units. They have a high reading range (distance to 10 m) and a short access time which makes the identification of fast mobile objects possible. A combination with saw sensors (e.g. for temperature measurement) is possible. In addition the transponders are insensitive to mechanical stresses (break-resistant), contamination, wear, high temperatures as well as towards magnetic / electric fields. Sub-ordinate targets of the joint research project with small and medium size enterprises of IT branch are: 1. Development and improvement of the SAW transponder chips, the primary package and the transponder antenna as well as the secondary package. 2. Development of readers and the antennas for application in livestock husbandry. 3. Software development: data processing and evaluation of the reader signals, development of an operating interface and creation of interfaces. 4. Systems integration: conceptual design of devices in consideration of user requirements and environmental conditions in livestock husbandry (livestock farming), as well as integration in existing systems.
