Development of an Innovative Forecasting Model to Control Powdery Mildew (Podosphaera macularis) in Hops (Humulus lupulus)

Description:

Powdery mildew is a serious disease in hops which can only be controlled with preventive measures. To optimize the necessary sprayings the conditions for the infection have to be investigated. This biological data is elaborated in climate chambers with artificially infected single plants. 56 climate conditions are simulated which are the basis for the calculation of a control threshold. In outdoor trials at seven locations in the Hallertau region the epidemiological process has been observed and in the third year of this project powdery mildew is controlled based on this forecasting model. The difference in the susceptibility of the various hop cultivars is taken into consideration. This innovative forecasting model should solely be based on climate data. In this way a fast decision-making support is provided based on data obtained from agricultural-meteorological measurement stations via the internet.
