Collaborative project: Studies on the pathosystems powdery mildew / parsley and downy mildew / parsley, and development of a screening method for resistance breeding – Subproject 3

Description:

The risk of infection with a 'new” pathogen, downy mildew, has increased in the cultivation of parsley under increasingly mild, moist weather, making its cultivation little profitable without intensive control. Since 2000, downy mildew has been replacing other leaf spot pathogens like Septoria or Alternaria. In hot summer periods, powdery mildew occurs more intensely, which has already been the main problem of potted cultures. Applying fungicides has been restrained for an unknown epidemiology and high risk of residues in harvest products. Facts about susceptibility are unavailable or contradictory. The aim of the project is to develop and evaluate methods which allow a reliable, routine screening of parsley breeding material to susceptibility for powdery and/or downy mildew. It is especially the biology and epidemiology of both pathogens that have to be investigated. The development of a screening test method requires investigation on the influence of various climatic factors on the infection, sporulation, germination of spores, or the formation of zoospores, and the influence of the leaf age on the susceptibility and incubation period. Characterizing isolates on an assortment of test plants will differentiate potential pathotypes. Greenhouse and field trials over two years have been planned to evaluate the method.
