Collaborative project: Innovative characterisation and improvement of the feeding value of cereal grains (GrainUp) – Subproject 7
Description:
The aim of the project is to characterize the feeding value of cereal grains for several animal species comprehensively by using innovative assays and to develop approaches for predicting the feeding value used by the feed industry and plant breeders. Effects of feed processing on animal health will be investigated as well as impacts of climate change on the feeding value. The efficiency of utilisation of energy, protein and phosphorus will be improved and the excretion of nutrients into the environment reduced The characterization of the feeding value will be based on standardized experiments with pigs, poultry, ruminants and horses. Selected genotypes of wheat, barley, rye, triticale, oat and maize will be grown under standardized conditions and subjected to comprehensive chemical analyses. These grain batches will be used in all animal assays of the subprojects. The results will be delivered for application in practice and in parallel used for the development of in vitro methods. The data obtained in vitro will then add to the GrainUp database. Finally, prediction tools for estimating the feeding value will be developed. The collaboration comprises 12 subprojects and a central project which is responsible for project coordination, cultivation and analyses of the grain samples, overall analyses of the research results, development of the prediction tools, and transfer of the results into practice.
