Collaborative project: Development of a marker-assisted improvement of drought tolerance in faba bean - subproject 3

Description:

Creation of winter faba beans with marked genetic improvement for drought tolerance. Intended findings will for the first time verify suitability & prospects of marker-assisted association analyses in faba bean. Identify lines with maximum divergence for drought tolerance (further ones can be created based on the results). Inbred lines of the Göttingen winter bean population shall be phenotyped (field drought tolerance & physiological traits) and genotyped via markers. Study extent & structure of genetic linkage disequilibrium between markers, detect marked QTL for drought response (flowering to maturity; spring beans as control). Cooperation of Univ. Göttingen (WL), NPZ Lembke (OS) & JKI at Groß-Lüsewitz (CB). Material: 100 homoz. lines (linkage map); 200 homoz. lines (Gött. winter bean pop.) for association analysis. Year 1 & 2: seed propagation; marker-work; ‘rain-out-shelter’ trials (WL & CB) & desiccation field trials (OS; years 1-3). Year 1-3: physiological analysis (membrane stability, rel. water deficit, proline- & glycinebetaine, soluble sugars, chloroph., 13C discrim.; CB). Year 3: marker-work, joint analyses, publication, transfer of results.
