Comparative analysis of defensins/defensin-like proteins during reproduction and pathogen defense in maize
Description:
Gamete interaction during double fertilization is essential for reproductive success and thereby crop yield. Cell surface proteins essential for gamete interaction and fertilization success will be identified and studied in this project. The role of identified candidate genes will be analyzed during the double fertilization process and their interaction partners will be identified. Subcellular localization patterns and protein-protein interaction(s) will be studied in detail during gamete recognition, adhesion and fusion. Complementation tests will be performed in respective mutant backgrounds using putative orthologs from crop plants.
