Effect of folate oversupplementation on the proliferation and the expression of relevant genes in colon carcinoma cells

Recent publications indicate that mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid, which was introduced int the USA and Canada in 1998, let to a significant decrease of neural tube de-fects among newborns. Concurrenly, both countries experienced a temporary increase in the incidence of colon carcinomas (Mason et al., 2007). Additionally, Cole et al. (2007) found in a secondary prevention study of colon carcinomas an increase of adenomas in the group, supplemented with folic acid, after 5 years (Cole et al., 2007). These findings are intensely discussed Europe because of some European countries propose the introduction of mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid as well. There are controversial scientific data about the correlations between folic acid intake and carcinogenesis. Therefore further research is required. In this context we suppose to analyse the expression of genes of the folate metabolism and transport as well as genes relevant in cell cycle and tumor develop-ment in human colon carcinoma cells growing in folic acid excess.
