Application of innovative breeding strategies to improve malting barley for organic farming

Description:

Aim: At the moment there does not exist any malting barley variety which fulfils the requirements of organic farming. To increase the acreage of malting barley in organic farming novel varieties with special features will be necessary. Applying efficient methods using an precision breeding approach the project aims to develop advanced breeding material which can subsequently be developed to successful varieties by plant breeders. Goals: Aims and criteria for selection according to the requirements of organic farming will be determined. Breeding lines and varieties will be screened for their suitability as parental lines for crossing. Progeny of theses crosses will be selected applying the criteria determined before. Already existing breeding lines from Getreidezüchtungsforschung Darzau and the LfL will be screened and selected using the specific criteria in particular for resistance against loose smut. The test for resistance against loose smut will be performed at the breeding station in Darzau where this test is well established. The breeding material will be analysed using molecular markers in order to identify novel molecular markers for these disease resistances as well as for other traits which are important for ecological farming. From a cross using divergent parental lines a linkage map will be constructed to assign important traits and resistances to chromosomal regions of barley. Plant material selected in the steps before will be tested at four locations, agronomic characters will be scored and malting quality of theses lines will be analysed.
