Normal human neural progenitorcells as a screening model for substances that are toxic for neural development.

Description:

In the EU „White Paper“ Strategy for a Future Chemicals Polcy (2001), the REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) project for existing and new chemicals was proposed. This paper intended risk assessment of substances to provide protection of health and environment for future generations. 30.000 chemicals will be tested according to REACH. Inclusion of developmental neurotoxicity into the REACH project is currently under discussion. The OECD guideline for testing of chemicals (New Guideline 426) suggests testing of substances for developmental neurotoxicology.; ; For this endpoint, no validated alternative in vitro methods are available; therefore numerous animal experiments are planned. Because of this lack of reliable in vitro methods, we have established a human primary neural cell culture model in our lab. We will utilize this system for the identification of suitable endpoints which predict toxicity of chemicals on the developing nervous system.
