FOR 536 P7: Regional water balance and matter flow

Description:

The overall scope of subproject P7 is to assess the effects of land use on the water, C and N cycle in the Xilin watershed by combining field measurements and modeling techniques. The project follows the general philosophy of concurrent data collection and model development. Field measurements include the monitoring of 7 gauging stations in a nested set up to continuously monitor water level. Rating curves to estimate discharge are estimated based on frequent discharge measurements. In addition, grab water samples will be taken to analyze (i) 2H and 18O isotope ratios to calculate mean residence times, (ii) element composition of around 20 constituents for source area separation based on an End Member Mixing Analysis, and (iii) Ntotal, NO3-, NH4+ and DOC concentration. The long term time series of discharge and nutrients of the Xilin river and its tributaries are used to verify the eco-hydrological, semi-distributed catchment model Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and the physically based, fully distributed Catchment Model Framework (CMF). CMF will be used in combination with the isotopic measurements and results of the End Member Mixing Analysis to investigate the relevant landscape scale hydrological processes. The SWAT model is strong in simulating agricultural management as well as land use change effects and will be used to analyze future land use scenarios.Combining the two modeling approaches will increase the predictive power of the hydrological simulations. To simulate the interaction of water, C and N between different pools under human interaction, the results of the MAGIM modeling groups are pooled. Relevant model output, e.g. spatial distribution of soil water is passed on to other projects within the MAGIM modeling group.
