Collaborative project: Enhancing resistance of winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) against the fungal parhogen Verticillium longisporum depending on climate change. Subproject 3
Description:
Improvement of resistance and/or tolerance of winter oil seed rape (Brassica napus) against attack by Verticillium longisprorum, a fungal pathogen which is causing a severe wild disease. This pathogen seems to be particularly supported by climate change and the disease is generally very hard to combat. For this purpose, molecular markers for resistance will be developed which will allow mareker-assisted selection complementing classical biocemical and breeding methods. Furthermore, resistance mechanisms will be characterized and tested for their sensibility to components of climate change, e.g. drough. This project comprisis two major approaches, i.e. phytopathological and breeding research, incl. their application by the participating rapeseed breeding companies. The goal of breeding research will be followed by a combination of specific, particularly innovative genome- and transcriptome-based analysis and marker techniques. Therefor, mapping populations of rapeseed will be used which simultaneously will be investigated phytopathologically to characterize the resistance phenotype. The satbility of Verticillium resistance will be tested under varying environmental conditions. In addition, the drough stress reaction of desease resistant genotypes will be observed under disease attack.
