Gamete interaction and fusion during double fertilization
Description:
We aim to understand the (dual) role of polymorphic defensins and defensin-like proteins (DEFLs) for reproductive success and pathogen defense. Using a comparative approach, we will identify and analyze molecular signaling mechanisms induced by various DEFL subclasses in the maize silk and ovule, which are simultaneously invaded both by pollen tubes and fungal hyphae. The physiological activity and molecular interaction of selected DEFLs with their targets will be studied with the long-term goal to overcome intra- and interspecific prezygotic hybridization barriers and to engineer fungal resistance in crop plants.
