Strategies to reduce and avoid copper in organic potato production
Description:
'The main objective of the project is the control of potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) in organic farming by reduced amounts of copper. A key goal is to improve both plant production methods and control measures in order to avoid or significantly postpone Phytophthora infections and thus, to reduce both frequency and application rates of direct treatments of the disease. The background idea of this approach is the fact that Phytophthora infections often originate from latent infestation of seed potatoes. Technical means as well as plant production measures will be developed and tested for their efficiency to reduce initial infestation levels and to increase the resistance of the potato. Among these are seed treatments with substances alternative to copper, reduced amounts of copper as well as seed bed preparation with glucosinolate-rich Brassicaceae to improve the anti-phytopathogenic potential of the soil. Testing of plant extracts or plant strengtheners for their effect on P. infestans aims at revealing alternatives or supplements to copper seed treatments. Furthermore, formulations with reduced amounts of copper will be tested. The success of the strategies will be checked via disease evaluation, potato yield determination and PCR-based detection of latent infestation.
