FUGATO-plus Collaborative Projects– Functional Genome Analysis in Animal Organisms

With the invitation of tenders and the approval of FUGATO, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has added a further research focus to the National Genome Research Area. On the 12th and 13th of December 2002, the foundation stone for the support measure FUGATO was laid in Berlin with a comprehensive workshop where industry and science met to jointly discuss and formulate the requirements for the „Functional Genome Analysis within the Animal Organism“ While so far, the support through the BMBF concentrated on research work in the fields of the plant genome (GABI), the microorganisms (GenoMik) and in research of human diseases and therapies (NGFN). New approaches are now going to be pointed out with the help of FUGATO to improve especially animal health and product quality. For further details please check the text for invitation of tenders and the FUGATO-brochure (pdf file, 1.6 MB, only in german). By June 6, 2004, a total of 14 cooperative project outlines have been submitted to the Project Executing Organization Jülich (PTJ). After the expertise through the Scientific Advisory Board, 6 cooperative projects for the species cattle, pig, and chicken have been recommended for support. These projects form a network of the leading academic institutes with participation of the industry, especially the livestock breeding industry. The research focus of these projects centers on animal health as well as on product quality and thus serves both animal welfare and the consumer. Since the characteristic features of animal health and product quality as a rule are complex and multifactorial and are marked by a low heritability, the genetic progress by means of conventional breeding programs is limited. Therefore, through the integration of functional genomic (transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic) and traditional methods of animal breeding, an effective selection should also be possible when it comes to traits with low heritability.
