Beschreibung

HIP faculty focus their research on the elucidation and targeted manipulation of gene and protein functions in selected crop plants, and on unraveling the molecular systematics, phylogeny and evolution of crop plants, related wild species and other important plant groups. Research at the HIP integrates experimental approaches of ecophysiology, developmental biology, cell biology, biochemistry, phytopathology, molecular phylogenetics, evolutionary biology and classical biodiversity research. In addition to functional genomics studies with Arabidopsis thaliana, research in HIP emphasizes in-depth analysis of those biological processes difficult or impossible to carry out with this model plant. These include gametophyte development, seed filling and storage protein deposition, as well as the post-harvest physiology of vegetative storage organs. This dual approach culminates in the search for molecular strategies (marker-assisted selection, genetic engineering) to positively affect key factors such as yield and stress tolerance, therefore making a clear commitment to plant biotechnology.
