Description
The Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW) is the central technical and scientific governmental agency of the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau und Stadtentwicklung, BMVBS) and the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (Wasser- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung des Bundes, WSV) and provides consultancy services for the development and construction, operation and maintenance of federal waterways (in accordance with Article 45, para. 3 of the German Federal Waterways Act). BAW belongs to the BMVBS. Its central office is based in Karlsruhe, additional offices are located in Hamburg and Ilmenau.
Additionally the office of the German Coastal Engineering Research Council (Kuratorium für Forschung im Küsteningenieurwesen, KFKI) with its library is located at the Hamburg Office of the BAW. The Service Centre Information Technology of the BVBS (DLZ-IT BVBS) has been established at the BAW office in Ilmenau.
