BfR - Department 9: Experimental Toxicology and ZEBET (BfR - TOX)

Institution

Description

In the Department “Experimental Toxicology and ZEBET” molecular toxicologists and nanotoxicologists will in future work closely together with ZEBET which has been established since more than two decades. ZEBET is the Centre for the Documentation and Evaluation of Alternatives to Animal Experiments at BfR. The objective is a close networking of toxicological expertise for the purpose of establishing and validating in vitro- and in silico methods which are to replace the regulatory animal experiments in chemical safety assessment. In this way the expert knowledge of ZEBET gained over the last years is complemented and strengthened by other areas which will contribute towards the clarification of the mechanisms of toxicity induced by chemicals and / or nanoparticles. Through the joint appointment of a W3 university chair of BfR and Charité it will moreover, be possible to increasingly integrate the 3R concept at the university level and in fundamental research. Furthermore, research on the third 'R', ie refinement, is to be established and advanced in this Department. For that reason the laboratory animal husbandry of BfR (Unit 'Reference Material and Certification') is integrated into Department 9.
