Institute for the protection of bees (JKI-BS)

Institution

Description

On April 1st, 2016 the new Institute for Bee Protection in the Julius Kühn Institute started work.

The Institute for Bee Protection deals with a wide range of tasks. Key issue is the interaction between bees and agriculture or agricultural landscapes. Risks for the pollinators themselves or for their pollination services that are emanating from crop farming should be recognized.  Among other approaches, new strategies and procedures must be developed to minimize potential hazards and risks. With its research and scientific assessments, the new institute shall contribute to preserving and improving the biological diversity in agro-ecosystems and agricultural landscapes. It is the will of politics and society to ensure high protection standards for bees and other pollinators. All these aspects and measures will benefit honey bees and other bee species. And after many years of decline, the now growing community of beekeepers will win too.
