Purpose of research: Basic research

Hybee is a joint project to explore the molecular mechanisms of hygienic activity of honey bees to sick brood. The honey bee is because of their honey production and pollination economic performance is a very important animal. In recent years, the bees in Germany decreased significantly. A major reason for this development is the ektoparasitische mite Varroa destructor. The early divesting ill breeding is considered most effective strategy to combat this in the bee parasite reproductive cells. The sensitivity to the fragrance bouquet of ill health plays at the breeding behavior of the honey bee a central role. Basis for the planned gene studies are infrared video observations individually marked worker bees with different hygiene behaviour against varroa infected and lime-affected hatching brood. In addition to this, by optophysiologische techniques examines the steps in the detection of smell profiles important, and which bodies for individual differences in behavior are particularly relevant. The behavior differences can directly than differences in gene described. These are differences in the transcription of about 12,000 genes ( 'genome chip' of the honey bee) using the microarray method. These candidate genes of the reaction paths are using Q-PCR technology verified and some functional testing. The results will be the basis for molecular genetic approaches to the breeding varroa resistant bees.
