Project code: 28RZ5IP014
Contract period: 15.01.2014 - 31.05.2017
Budget: 44,939 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: stone fruit, horticulture, sustainability, pome, crop protection, plant health, integrated plant protection

The project aims at the development of a demonstrator system for adaptive tree-specific flower thinning with real-time capability and an economic design, which has been validated in field trials and comes along with guidelines for usage under practical conditions. Such a system is required by commercial fruit growers to substitute the conventional chemical or manual thinning measure. The development of a new feasible system will be achieved by cooperation between researchers, enterprises and experimental fruit stations. The high level of innovation is given by a) the novel approach to thin fruit trees adaptively leading to an enhanced degree of mechanization and automation of flower thinning as an essential measure in orchards; b) the new technologies involved (mobile sensor system for assessing flower density, spatial information system, controllable actuator); c) agronomic algorithms for controlling adaptive mechanical thinning. The proposed project comprises three work packages: 1.) Sensors (lead: CLK); 2.) Algorithms and Modelling (lead: ATB); 3.) Information System (lead: CiS) 4.) Test and Verification (lead: KOB).
