Project code: JKI-SF-08-1232
Contract period: 01.10.2018 - 30.09.2021
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: biodiversity, monitoring, structural element

In the biodiversity project "Structural elements in agricultural landscapes of East Germany - significance for biotope and species protection" (Kretschmer et al. 1995), funded by the BfN in 1991, extensive surveys of small structures, arable land and species (vascular plants, birds, butterflies, ground beetles, mammals / amphibians / reptiles, ground beetles) in East German agricultural landscapes were carried out. These historical data are to be prepared and repeated up-to-date. A long-term comparison is to be made, which is based exactly on the same area geometry of the earlier study regions as well as on the considered characteristics of biodiversity. Important objectives of the project are the determination of changes in arable land and small structures, the determination of the effects of the conversion of some of the areas to organic farming on biotope structure and species diversity, the determination of the effects on species diversity while retaining conventional farming, the ecological effectiveness of buffer strips for habitat functions of arable land and small structures that have been laid out for many years and the determination of the effect of newly established hedge structures on species diversity. This should serve to identify key factors for improving biodiversity and to derive priority measures for biodiversity conservation in arable farming areas.
