Collaborative project: Potential of algae-based biolubricant additives: extraction, application and technical properties - from the plant to the technical product, subproject P5 (HSW): Extraction of raw materials from algae cultures

Project

Project code: 22025518
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Budget: 328,514 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: biobased lubricant additives, renewable ressources

The overall objective of the project is the substitution of mineral oil-based lubricant additives with microalgae-based compounds. The project aims at identifying ingredients from microalgae, and further on proofing and demonstrating their potential for the use as lubricant additives in machining applications. The opportunities of this approach are (1) mineral oil-reduced lubricant application, (2) significant resource conservation, and (3) avoidance of the food or fuel conflict. The subproject P5 "Extraction of raw materials from algae cultures" will realize the cultivation and selection of microalgae strains serving as resource for raw materials. Suitable algae strains are first selected, and their growth conditions are further optimized in culture vessels on a laboratory scale. The focus is not only on the production of biomass, but also on the biosynthesis of the most promising substances. The project also includes the harvesting and extraction (chemical-physical analysis) of respective raw materials. Finally, we strive to scale-up from the laboratory to the technical scale.
