Project code: 100261165
Contract period: 01.03.2016 - 31.12.2018
Budget: 244,990 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

For every hl beer produced in the brewing industry 20 kg brewers spent grains occur as a byproduct. Brewers spent grains contains ~ 80% water and is used as animal feed whereby an additional dehydration step is necessary due to shelf life. There is no known efficient substance based use of the incidental press water thereof as well as only a minimal amount of literature concerning its chemical composition. Therefore, a cooperation project between TU Bergakademie Freiberg and TU Dresden was initiated with the aim of developing an alternative concept for press water (PW) of brewer’s spent grains by applying a selective membrane-supported separation/extraction of nutritionally relevant ingredients for added value increase.
