Contract period: 01.06.2019 - 31.12.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research

In the context of the previous project "Separation of nutritionally valuable components from brewers' spent grain using membrane filtration” (project number 100261165), an alternative utilization concept was investigated for the largest waste stream or residue - the wet spent grain - resulting from the brewing process.

In order to increase the feasibility of the developed process, the fractionation of the individual components must be further refined. To this end, basing on the extensive knowledge gained from the completed project, the previously investigated methods are to be further improved by targeted adaptation of additional process conditions and the introduction of alternative methods. Thus, the suitability of non-pressure-driven membrane processes and extractive processes for further fractionation should be investigated. The process steps focus first and foremost on conditioning the TPW in order to address the problem of protein polyphenol complex formation. Depending on the success with regard to extensive in-situ decomplexing during the pressing process, two different solutions (LW) can be pursued.
