Project code: 28I03401
Contract period: 01.05.2020 - 30.04.2022
Budget: 258,810 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
Keywords: mixed forest, sustainability, forest conversion, knowledge transfer, networking

Currently, forest conversion from pure pine stands to uneven-aged mixed stands in Ukraine is given higher priority. Besides the long-term natural regeneration of pine, Ukrainian foresters practice more and more intensive thinning with the goal to establish well-structured, robust and vital forests. In the first project component, together with the state forest entreprise of Lviv, strategies of forest conversion from conventional pine stands into multifunctional forests will be elaborated. Hereby, special emphasis is laid on *the investigation of the potential of natural regeneration for the recovery of clearcut areas, *the identification of strategies to produce valuable timber in resilient stands, *the implementation of alternatives to clearcut. The second project component is dealing with the resilience of pine stands against fire, drought and extreme wind. In its natural range in Central Asia, Scots pine is one of the most robust and resilient species with respect to the mentioned stressors. This doesn't hold of course for monospecific plantations of pine. For both project components, a central common goal is to gain scientific evidence which can be used in practical applications in silvicultural guidelines or management prescriptions for forest entreprises and forest owners, respectively.
