Collaborative project: Non-destructive assessment of root formation capacity in cuttings of ornamental plants using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) – Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2815304807
Contract period: 01.10.2009 - 30.09.2012
Budget: 176,874 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Root formation capacity of ornamental cuttings is strongly affected by nitrogen (N) and carbohydrate (CH) status. However, the lack of methods for a direct measurement of these internal quality parameters impedes a broad use of this knowledge within the young plant industry. Within the joint research a calibration model for non-destructive measurement of the N and CH status of cuttings by near-infrared-spectroscopy was developed. The model is usable for Pelargonium, Chrysanthemum, New Guinea Impatiens, Osteospermum and Poinsettia. Also the effect of N and CH status of cuttings on adventitious root formation under varying environmental conditions throughout stock plant cultivation and rooting of cuttings was investigated. The results give producers of ornamental cuttings a new tool to ascertain the quality of yielded cuttings and to evaluate and to optimise conditions during cultivation, transport and storage.
