Development and use recommendations of selected methods for distinguishing between organic and conventional products

Project

Project code: 2808OE225
Contract period: 01.02.2009 - 31.12.2011
Budget: 56,321 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The main purpose of the project aims at 1) advancing differentiating methods for products from certified organic and conventional production and 2) their implementation in quality assurance of control bodies, the food industry, as well as the food control authorities. Firstly, discriminating methods will be assessed in a literature study based on criterias such as their application potential or trustworthiness. Secondly, selected validated methods such as FAS and stable isotop analysis (IRMS) will be further developed using well defined samples. The product range for IRMS and FAS will be defined in collaboration with the food industry and will comprise raw and processed samples. In addition, the potential of the profiling techniques proteomics and metabolomics will be assessed with well characterised wheat samples from the DOK long term trial. Comparison trials will be undertaken with all three methods using wheat. Later on, practicability of the methods IRMS and FAS will be tested 1) regarding implementation with in-house quality assurance systems of the food industry as well as certification bodies, 2) in terms of differentiation of market samples, and 3) in economic terms. Procedures The project is structured in 6 work packages. In WP 2, available differentiating methods will be evaluated based on their benefits and limitations. In WP 3 and 4, selected methods will be further elaborated using raw as well as processed food samples. In WP 5, the practicability of the methods IRMS and FAS will be tested. Dissemination and management activities will be organised in WP 6 and WP 1, respectively. Results and dissemination In 2011, a workshop will be held with all relevant stakeholders in order to discuss the practicability of the methods for control bodies as well as internal quality assurance system. All results will be elaborated for the target groups involved at fibl.org, presented at workshops and described in a joint report at the end of the project.
