Project code: BfR-BIOS-08-1322-315
Contract period: 01.04.2008 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

Generally, routine microbiological detection methods for Campylobacter are applied to detect C. jejuni and C. coli. Nontheless, methods are needed to detect other Campylobacter speceisd as well. Threse species need specific conditions for recovery and identification (e.g. C. gracilis, C. hyointestinalis, C. showae, C. sputorum subsp. sputorum biovar faecalis need aerobic atmosphere; C. concisus, C. curvus, C. gracilis, C. mucosalis, C. rectus und C. showae need H2 and/or fumarate for growth).Prevalence data of these species in animals and food is urgently needed. Currently, no data about the occurrence of non jejuni/coli Campylobacter spp. are available in Germany. These data are needed for a microbial risk assessment.
