Project code: FLI-0-02-IBIZ 16
Contract period: 01.01.2005 - 31.12.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Malabsorption syndrome causes severe economic losses in broiler operations. Several infectious agents have been isolated from affected herds. Up to date it was only possible to reproduce the syndrome using intestinal homogenates from affected birds, but not by individual infectious agents. Based on a field study conducted in broiler chicks from herds in Northern Germany, a significant correlation was found between infection of clinically infected birds with rotaviruses and intestinal lesions. The objective of our investigation is to determine if rotaviruses cause MAS in broiler chicks by experimental inoculation of broiler chicks with these agents.
