Purpose of research: Applied research

The project analyses the vulnerability of Norway spruce stands to risks associated with extreme drought events whose frequency, intensity, and/or duration are expected to increase in the future as a result of ongoing climate change. We will study different populations and provenances throughout the distribution range of Norway spruce in Europe using material from a provenance trial. Drought tolerance will be assessed using growth and vitality indicators, and the results will be linked to physiological indicators and wood-anatomical traits. Genetic markers will be developed and tested for their linkage to drought tolerance. Combined field and greenhouse experiments will enable us to evaluate the drought tolerance of Norway spruce at different stand ages and from an ecological, physiological and genetic perspective. In doing so, the project will provide science-based knowledge and recommendations for silvicultural practice in order to optimise forest adaptation with the use of drought-tolerant spruce provenances.
