Establishment of innovation networks for the development of 'stables of the future' for pigs
Project
Project code: 28N304000
Contract period: 01.05.2021
- 31.03.2023
Budget: 170,673 Euro
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination
Keywords: husbandry techniques, pigs, stable building, stable climate, animal health, animal husbandry
Food-safety, protection of the environment and the climate as well as economic viability are required and of vital importance for a sustainable pig production in addition to aspects of animal welfare. Therefore, the aim of the project is to set up a Pig Innovation Network (South). The Network acquires and bundles the state of knowledge in order to develop potentials of innovation for future-proof housing for pigs (stables of the future) and to test and evaluate new animal welfare-friendly husbandry using experimental farms for pigs. The main focus are structurally innovative solutions for a socially acceptable livestock husbandry with high animal welfare standards, which meet the requirements of the third level of the 'staatliche Tierwohlkennzeichnung'. These solutions should also have a low environmental impact, be feasible in practice and be economically viable. In the case of emerging conflicts of goals, considerations should be made in favor of animal welfare. The transfer of knowledge from the experimental facilities should already take place during the development process and the ongoing process procedures. This direct and targeted exchange of specialist knowledge has proven to be beneficial in the Modell- und Demonstrationsvorhaben (MuD) and thus serves as a model.
