Sustainable Land Management in the North German lowlands under changing environmental and social framework conditions (NaLaMa-nT)

Collaborative Project

Project code: 033L029A - 033L029J
Contract period: 01.09.2010 - 31.08.2015
Coordinating institution: Northwest German Forest Research Institute

Sustainable land management cannot longer be considered and developed without taking influences of global change into account. Current changes of both, markets (resources, goods and finances) and climate, are challenges, strongly influencing opportunities and risks for forestry and agriculture. Apart from that, structural changes within the regions are of great importance. They ask for adaptation and, if necessary, further reorientation of the land management. In view of rising uncertainties these adjustments have to be designed to enable flexible reactions to changing environments and at the same time consider the interdependencies between land use systems. The project “NaLaMa-nT” will develop a knowledge and decision basis for a sustainable land management for the the North German Plain against the background of climate change and increasingly globalised markets. The development of the knowledge and decision basis relies on a transdisciplinary analysis of current land use systems (forestry, agriculture, and water management) and their interactions in four model regions. Nature conservation is considered an integral part of these management forms. The intensive integration of research and regional stakeholders shall help to gain additional knowledge, to quicken development of overall concepts, and to come up with effective adaptation measures. This transdisciplinary analysis generates the base for regional concepts of “sustainable land management”, agreed by all project partners. In a next step, the consequences of climate and market changes will be modelled for different land use systems using regional scenarios. Based on this impact assessment, the regional concepts will be improved in a participative way. Subsequently, necessary adaptation measures will be derived, supported by an assessment of current legal frameworks and funding instruments.
