Climate change

Project code: EIP-Agri-BW-2023-GAGF
Contract period: 01.01.2024 - 31.12.2026
Budget: 800,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: outdoor horticulture and woody crops (incl. viticulture, olives, fruit, ornamentals), climate change (incl. GHG reduction, adaptation and mitigation, and other air related issues)

The effects of climate change have so far only been examined to a limited extent in commercial fruit growing. Challenges such as the shift in full bloom from early May to mid-April and the resulting increased risk of late frosts, long periods of drought, torrential rain, strong solar radiation (UVB radiation) and frequent hail events are in the foreground. Studies on the occurrence of new pathogens as a result of climate change are usually only available in commercial fruit cultivation. The effects of climate change on orchards have not been systematically investigated to date. The possible solution approaches of commercial fruit growing, which are being developed at the Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau Bodensee, must be checked for their applicability for 'Streuobstanbau' and strategies for future-oriented, climate-resilient 'Streuobstanbau' to be developed. In addition, for the orchards of the future, it is important to develop practice-oriented concepts for the processing and marketing of 'Streuobst' products in addition to innovative management adapted to climate change in order to ensure the
