Climate change is bringing extreme weather events such as droughts and heavy rainfall, which significantly affect the water content of silage in the silo. These variations affect feed quality and can cause animal health problems. Inaccurate adjustment of feed levels to changing weather conditions leads to inefficient use of resources and wastage of feed. Accurate determination of the dry matter content of silage is essential for balanced feeding of dairy cows. The NextMix project relies on novel sensor technology to improve feeding accuracy on dairy farms. By using depth impedance spectroscopy sensors in the feed mixer, the dry matter content is measured and adjusted in real time during the mixing process, allowing the feed ration to be more accurately matched to the cows' needs, regardless of the weather. The system monitors the homogeneity of the mix and the even distribution of feed on the feed fence. More precise feeding improves animal health, increases milk production and makes more efficient use of resources.
