Climate change

Project code: EIP-Agri-Rlp-2022-GAGF
Contract period: 01.01.2022 - 31.12.2024
Budget: 609,900 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Outdoor horticulture and woody crops (incl. viticulture, olives, fruit, ornamentals), Soil, Biodiversity and nature, Landscape/land management, Climate change

Agroforestry is a form of land use in which the cultivation of woody plants is combined with agricultural or horticultural crops and / or livestock farming on a cultivated area. This form of land use can make a decisive contribution to the protection of biodiversity, climate and natural resources, while at the same time being economically sustainable. Different agroforestry systems are being investigated in the project in order to assess their impact on the soil (soil water balance, greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration) and biodiversity (in particular wild bees and plants). In addition, the role of advisory systems and the existence of relevant value chains will be considered in the project and farmers will be informed about the opportunities and challenges of agroforestry systems. The findings can serve as a basis for the possible promotion of agroforestry systems as an agri-environmental measure. The aim is to provide evidence-based findings and recommendations for the integration of agroforestry systems into agriculture. In addition, a permanent information platform is to be established for Rhineland-Palatinate.
