Alternative proteins from regional insect larvae in piglet rearing
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2023-TH
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 105,131 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Animal husbandry
The lack of protein feed leads to import and price dependency. In addition, the cultivation of imported soy and fishing for fishmeal is associated with very negative environmental consequences. Insect production can be a regional, self-produced source of protein for pig farms and thus increase added value in addition to increasing independence. The aim of the project is the elaboration of a concept for the integration of insect larvae feeding (black soldier fly - BSF) into existing feeding systems of pig farms. Thereby, the possibility of using a regionally produced alternative in pig feeding shall be demonstrated. Furthermore, the market entry of insect larvae fattening in pig farms shall be strengthened by a concrete use case and the acceptance by farmers shall be increased.
