Project code: EIP-Agri-NI-2025
Contract period: 01.01.2025 - 31.12.2027
Budget: 498,531 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: biodiversity and nature, pest/disease control in plants, fodder and feed, organic farming

The LightTrap:Practice project develops and validates an innovative, technology-based insect management system for greenhouse vegetable production. Vegetable farming faces growing challenges from stricter regulations, labor shortages, and climate change, while the effectiveness of synthetic pesticides is impaired by active ingredient bans and resistance development. The autonomous system attracts insects using spectrally adjustable LED light surfaces, automatically recognizes them through artificial intelligence, and selectively removes them with laser technology while protecting beneficial insects. Simultaneously, automated monitoring enables informed decision-making and economical use of plant protection measures. The Operational Group consisting of Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V., Leibniz University Hannover, and vegetable farms Hennstedter Gewächshaus GmbH & Co. KG and Gemüsegärtnerei Kalkriese transfers this innovation from research into operational practice, contributing to pesticide-free, sustainable insect management and supporting the transformation capacity of Lower Saxony's agricultural and food industry.
