The aim of the activity network FANILEaktiv is the support of cultivation of non-legume protein crops, under consideration of exemplary up- and downstream value chains (VC) for demonstration purpose. The network will focus on crops like buckwheat (Fagopyrum sp.), oat (Avena sativa), sunflower (Helianthus annuus), amaranth (Amaranthus sp.), quinoa (Chenopodium sp.), as well as grain hemp (Cannabis sativa), linseed (Linum usitatissimum), chia (Sativa sp.) or rapeseed (Brassica napus), optional cultures like millet (Panicum miliaceum) and spelt (Triticum aestivum subsp. spelta), but also mushrooms, truffles (Tuber) and algae. The heart of the network are farmers and companies, that are already experienced in the cultivation and the processing of these protein crops, or at the experimental stage. By connecting these players with other stakeholders of research and trade, new utilisation and sales opportunities for human food will be identified, developed and supported in their marketing opportunities. The connection and knowledge transfer will be supported by topic specific public events like field days, networking days and seminars. The activities will be organised by the associated network partners and extended to other german regions, by integrating regional advisors, farmers and companies to develop regional VC. The networking activities will be accompanied by production trials aiming on climatic adaptivity of the protein crops, as well as economical evaluations, for addressing questions of future sustainable production. Using buckwheat as an example, accompanying product analysis will be carried out to improve baking properties, while grain hemp will be used to demonstrate possibilities for local protein extraction for strengthen local preparation and processing approaches. In addition, the products application in texturized plant products in order to demonstrate a specific use of raw materials and thus demonstrate the VC through to the final food product.
