Modeling nitrogen excretions of dairy cattle for improving national emission inventories and farm-level assessments

Project

Project code: 28N204804
Contract period: 01.10.2022 - 31.12.2025
Budget: 188,940 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: emissions, animal feed, milk, cattle, animal husbandry

The joint research project aims to improve the methodology of the German ammonia and greenhouse gas inventories by integrating data regarding milk urea contents, which are measured during routine milk control. New and improved routine methodology will be developed based on comprehensive analysis of alternative calculation approaches, data, knowledge and research results of preceding studies. Furthermore, existing research data will be integrated and further analyzed in order to enable targeted advice for farmers and support of mitigation measures. Additional feeding experiments aim to improve assessment of existing potentials to reduce nitrogen excretions by optimized feed. The experiments are aligned with current recommendations regarding nitrogen efficient feeding and also take into consideration effects on milk yield and animal health. The connection of both parts of the project is ensured by including milk urea values in the differentiated analyses, which also consider feed rations. This also supports immediate transfer of project results regarding development and further reduction of nitrogen excretion into agricultural practices within the dairy sector. The two project aims lead to two tasks. A third task ensures their connection and transfers their results.
