Digital Phenotyping of Pear Rust (Gymnosporangium sabinae) on Genetic Resources of Pear (Pyrus communis and Pyrus spp.) in the Field

Project

Project code: JKI-ZO-23-4265
Contract period: 01.01.2025 - 31.12.2027
Purpose of research: Applied research

Project Goal: The project aims to identify pear varieties resistant or tolerant to pear rust. These more resilient varieties will help reduce the use of pesticides and promote a more sustainable pear production. Project Duration: 3 years Background: Pear rust is a disease that affects pear trees, leading to yield losses. Young trees are particularly vulnerable. Currently, the fungus is mainly controlled using chemical treatments, which is not always sustainable in practice. Approach: -A collection of 130 pear varieties and 541 wild species accessions will be evaluated for their susceptibility to pear rust. -Drones will be used to capture images of the pear trees three times a year (June, July, and August). -These images will be processed into high-resolution maps to digitally detect the disease symptoms. -Manual assessments will be conducted to validate the digital method. Expected Outcome: -The project aims to identify which pear varieties are less susceptible to pear rust. -The developed digital method is expected to reduce the effort required for evaluating pear varieties in the long term. -This could support the development of more resistant pear varieties, enabling a more sustainable fruit production system, especially for organic cultivation.
