Control of Volunteer Potatoes (implementation)
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2026
Contract period: 01.01.2026
- 31.12.2028
Budget: 509,476 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: equipment and machinery, arable crops
Volunteer potatoes are increasingly problematic as weed-like competitor plants in follow-up crops. They compete for light, water, and nutrients and promote disease and pest development. The project aims to develop a semi-autonomous robot using AI to detect these plants and destroy their underground tubers ? helping to secure healthy, high-yielding successor crops. The solution avoids herbicide use and is therefore highly relevant for organic farming. It addresses phytosanitary challenges by eliminating competitive weed pressure in crop rotations. The system is designed to allow future expansion to other weed species or farming systems.
