Pearjuice (implementation)
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2026
Contract period: 01.01.2026
- 31.12.2028
Budget: 580,632 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: outdoor horticulture and woody crops (incl. viticulture, olives, fruit, ornamentals), landscape/land management, climate change, fodder and feed, farm diversification
The survival of meadow orchards is threatened by increasing periods of heat and drought as a result of climate change. In contrast to the apple, the pear is much better adapted to this and could contribute to the preservation of these areas. The project promotes pear juice production from traditional orchards to enhance farm profitability, preserve old varieties, and foster biodiversity and climate-resilient landscapes. By forming a producer group, sharing harvest technology, and cooperating with a fruit press facility, economies of scale can be achieved and costs reduced. A curated list of robust, late-ripening pear varieties suitable for juice production will be another outcome.
