The use of chemical pesticides is increasingly being criticized as it can harm the environment, biodiversity and health. Regulation and increasing resistance are raising the pressure to find alternatives. At the same time, economic efficiency must be maintained. One promising solution is the use of laser technology for precise, chemical-free weed control. In the project, this technology is being tested in onion production, combined with new cultivation systems on 2-meter double rows. The laser is used in the onion row, while three strategies are compared in the inter-rows: Band spraying, mechanical hoeing and inter-row planting with rye (intercropping). The latter provides additional protection against erosion. The aim is sustainable, climate-fit onion cultivation. A tractor with automatic track guidance enables the precise use of laser technology in the field.
